Role Description – Chair - Construction Scotland Industry Leadership Group

Construction Scotland is the industry leadership group working with the Scottish Government to address the big issues affecting the industry and engage and co-ordinate action against the key priorities and issues which will lead to the successful growth and sustainability of the sector, and maximise its contribution to the wider Scottish Economy. For example, have been focussed on the Health and Safety issues affecting the sector as a result of Covid-19, whilst supporting and actioning a Construction Recovery and we are currently prioritising the development of an Accord with the Scottish Government.

The current chair is stepping down from this role after over 4 years in post and Construction Scotland is seeking to appoint a new chair.

The construction industry 

The construction industry touches every part of Scotland’s economy, communities and society. It shapes the quality of our environment and creates the great places where we live, work and play. In the coming years it is going to play an ever greater role in Scotland’s sustainability challenges, being a major cornerstone in our journey to net zero carbon. 

The industry generates £21.4billion per annum and makes a critical contribution to the wider Scottish economy. 

Construction Scotland

Construction Scotland is the leadership group (ILG) for the construction industry. It is a voluntary body with members of the ILG being an invited cohort of senior industry leaders. It has led the industry response to the COVID-19 pandemic, working with the Scottish Government and Industry Stakeholders to develop an effective recovery plan. 

The focus for 2021 is the development of an effective Industry Accord which will set out new ways of working for the future and ensure a strong and healthy construction industry to support the Scottish Economy going forward.

Attributes for the Chair of Construction Scotland Industry Leadership Group

The Chair will be an experienced and well-respected Industry Leader who is or has, led a business in the Construction Sector in Scotland. 

They must be passionate about developing a successful construction industry within Scotland and understand the contribution this can make to delivering the ambition of the Scottish Government to create inclusive economic growth which will benefit Scottish communities and societies. 

The Chair must have the leadership skills to bring the various stakeholders together, to encourage open debate whilst being able to bring the debate to conclusion and where possible achieve consensus. They must have the communication skills to enable them to engage everyone across the industry, including Scottish Government Ministers, Client bodies and the full construction supply chain.

The role is voluntary, and it is understood that Industry leaders will have substantial demands on their time. However, it is anticipated that the Chair will convene meetings with various stakeholders as required by the work of Construction Scotland and Chair ILG meetings four times a year.
